WHAT IS COVENANT?
The Covenant: The Latin word for covenant is con venire which means coming together. It involves two or more people in an agreement. Covenant is a bond between two or more people. Politically, covenant is a treaty and socially it means a lifelong friendship agreement; or it can refer to marital bond (marriage). The word “covenant” in the Hebrew actually comes from a word meaning “bond” or “fetter”. Ezekiel 20:37 “
It is theologically believed that covenant originated from a custom of eating together as recorded in Genesis 26:30; Genesis 31:54.
The generally accepted idea involving covenant is simply bonding or establishing a bond between two parties and this makes it bilateral.
Genesis 26:26-31
Abimelech and Isaac decided to enter into a covenant to live in peace. Although some scholars have argued that there was no covenant in humankind’s earliest history, since the word was not found in Genesis 1 to Genesis 5, that probably some editors of the scripture must have inserted the word in the Noahic and Patriarchal accounts.
Whatever measure these scholars chose to use in presenting their argument, the truth is that the word covenant was mentioned in the Bible as the book of Hosea linked us back to the covenant of creation. Hosea 6:7.

CLASSIFICATION OF THE COVENANT
Covenant is classified into three groups, namely:
- Conditional covenant: This class of covenant is based on certain obligations and prerequisites. If the requirements are not fulfilled, the covenant is broken annulled.
- Unconditional covenant: This class of covenant comes with no strings attached and will be kept regardless of fidelity or infidelity, faithfulness or unfaithfulness of one party.
- General covenant: This class of covenant is not directed to a specific person, people or group. It is a covenant meant for all. No race, colour, tribe, nation, etc. The covenant of Grace is for all. Not for the Jew alone but for the Gentiles too.
TYPES OF COVENANTS
There are four types of covenants, namely:
- Covenant of Creation
- God to Man Covenant
- Man to God covenant
- Man to Man covenant
In the third and fourth types of covenants, it is expected that the parties faithfully play their respective roles without any default as the second type of covenant could be conditional, unconditional or general covenant. The God to Man covenant which is God’s initiated covenant is the only covenant that is non-bilateral, because God initiates the covenant, determine the elements and confirm his covenant with humanity.
God’s initiated covenant is unilateral. Man is a recipient, not a contributor; Man is only expected to offer elements to the bond (obedience, faithfulness, sincerity, etc.), accept it as offered, keep it as demanded, and receive the results that God by oath, assures will not be withheld.
For instance, GRACE is a God initiated covenant. Man has contributed nothing. Man was not part of the plan of salvation because Man was the one to that God intend to save. The covenant of Grace was released to mankind; man is expected to offer the elements only Grace speaks.

THE COVENANT OF CREATION
This covenant controls the function of all creations. All that God created in the heavens, on the earth, beneath the earth, in the seas, and any other world unseen or unknown are positioned to function in respect to the covenant of creation. Any shift will alter a lot of things that may probably be disastrous in future.
Genesis 1:28-30 “. Blessing was pronounced on mankind with a covenant of work which was imbedded in the covenant of creation. Work was given to Adam to do, to enhance a better end of the blessing. Genesis 2:17. Adam and Eve failed by breaking the standard as covenant agents of God. Sin became part of them and they were driven out of the Eden garden.
Although God did not break his covenant with creation even with the fall of His covenant agents (Adam and Eve). He then established the New covenant which was aimed at bringing His covenant agents back to their original state with Him.
If man fails to accept the New covenant which is also called the covenant of Grace, that speaks of salvation, repentance and accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord and personal Saviour, the Author and Perfectre of man’s faith, will certainly be send out; let to go; cast away; divorce into Hell fire.
It was the covenant of creation God established to place all His creations in their respective limit. The sea could flow but not exceeding its limits. The Day has it limits of functioning as the Night comes. Any trespass or break of covenant of creation will result to catastrophic end if not now, in future.
People don’t break covenants and find it easy because every covenant has its unique purpose why it was established except it unconditional covenant. All that God created operates in the principle of covenant of creation, if there is any shift, then, the outcome becomes negative.
